Deco X50 not assigning IPs to hardwired devices
The Deco X50 is designed to make networking easy. But if your wired devices can’t get an IP, then it is quite frustrating. This issue is more common than it sounds, and it is often just a small setting or update away from being fixed.
Check for network outage
Before diving in solutions, it is important to confirm whether the deco x50 is the problem. Here is a simple checklist:
- Test another hardward device: If both fail to get IP, the problem is network wide.
- Check if Wi-Fi devices are fine: If Wi-Fi clients connect and receive IPS without any problem it means that the issue is separated from the Ethernet.
- Go to tplinkdeco.net: If the page loads on Wi-Fi, but not through wired connections, then your deco lan service is creating a problem.
- Check the TP link deco setup log: In the deco app, you can check if the device is giving The IP address or refusing request.
Note: Your wired device will either show the “unknown network” or will give itself 169.x.x.x address which is a classic sign DHCP did not respond.
Common Signs of This Issue
Some of the common signs of this issue are:
- Ethernet has no internet but Wi-Fi works perfectly.
- tplinkdeco.net inaccessible over wired connection but loads instantly on Wi-Fi.
- Your device reflects ‘No IP Address’ in network settings.
- Switches in between may show lights but no data flows.
- Static IP works but DHCP fails. If manually setting an IP lets you online, DHCP is the problem.
Sometimes, people confuse this with a dead Ethernet port but if you have recently done tp link deco setup changes or updated firmware that is software and not the hardware.
Restarting Devices
Sometimes just a restart can fix number of problems. Let’s see the proper way of doing it:
- You have to restart the wired device first.
- Make sure to unplug and restart the Deco X50 main unit. You have to wait for at least 60 seconds before plugging it back in.
- Verify all the connected Deco nodes. Sometimes, the wired device might be plugged into a secondary Deco that lost sync.
- Log into tplinkdeco.net after rebooting to confirm DHCP settings are active.
If you recently made tp link deco setup adjustments, restarting makes sure that the new settings are actually applied.
Updating Firmware
DHCP functionality is also affected by firmware errors. TP-Link releases updates which specifically target wired connection issues.
Here is how to do it:
- Go to the Deco app.
- Check the “More” → “Update Deco” section.
- All units are to be properly updateMake sure all units, not just the main one, are updated.
- Alternatively, go to tplinkdeco.net and and not just the main one.
If the current firmware is more than six months old then it is possible that an update itself will fix the wired IP assignment problem.
Long-Term Fixes
If this happens repeatedly, you need more than a quick reboot:
- Manually configure DHCP range: In your tp link deco setup, set a smaller or larger IP pool to avoid conflicts.
- Avoid double NAT: If your Deco is connected to another router that’s also giving out IPs, you’ll get conflicts. Put the Deco in Access Point mode via tplinkdeco.net.
- Use a managed switch: between Deco and wired devices. This isolates and handles traffic more cleanly.
- Replace suspect Ethernet cables: Even if they “look fine,” damaged cables can drop DHCP requests.
- Set static IPs for critical devices: This bypasses DHCP entirely for servers, NAS units, or workstations.
